In the 19th century, most beer was brewed in the area of consumption - Stroud had five breweries. Carpenters was noted for its fine ales and good labour relations.During the 20th century, a series of mergers resulted in the emergence of large firms and the closure of many small breweries. Carpenters closed in 1926, when the buildings were sold off, one of them later becoming the Coronation Hall.
