Engineering companies around Stroud were contracted to produce munitions for the War Office.
During World War I (1914-1918), T.H. & J. Daniels and George Waller & Son Limited manufactured artillery shells. Large numbers of women were employed in the place of men who were called up to fight for their country.
During World War II (1939-1945), George Waller & Son Ltd were contracted by the Admiralty to make a wide range of components and equipment. This included high pressure compressors for submarines, side discharging depth charges and track wheels for tanks.
