Sir Alfred Apperly
1839-1913

  Woollen cloth manufacturer. Won a number of gold medals and other awards for excellence of cloth. Built Rodborough Court in 1888. Knighted in 1907.

Benjamin Bucknall
1833-95

 

Architect. Born in Rodborough. Became a Roman Catholic.  Played an important part in building Woodchester Mansion (1854-62). Designed the Imperial Hotel, 1870 and St Rose of Lima Convent, 1867-94. From 1877, lived in Algiers.

Revd Wilbur Awdry

  Writer of children's railway stories. Born Ampfield, Hampshire. Ordained priest (1937). Came to live in Stroud on retirement from the priesthood in 1965. First books The Three Railway Engines 1945, Thomas, the Tank Engine 1946, Tramway Engines 1972. Had interest in local industrial archaeology. Died 21st March 1997

Edwin Beard Budding

  The inventor of the lawn-mower and adjustable spanner. Was also a machinist in Thrupp engineering works. Adapted a machine for cutting nap of cloth. (Patent 1830).
