Meaning "Eadbald's glade or clearing", Ebley's development was mainly due to the growing workforce at Ebley Mill and their need for housing in the 19th century. Further expansion came in the 20th century around Foxmoor Lane and Orchard Road. Stroudwater Canal was filled in around the Mill when it was bought by Stroud District Council. Today, the whole area has been redeveloped and the canal is once again.
