In the 18th century, a horse could pull (at best) a 1-ton load in a wagon. So even the prospect of better roads under the TurnpikeTrusts did not solve the problem of moving bulk goods like coal, stone, timber and grain.
However, the same horse could pull up to 30 tons in a barge on water. Linking Stroud and the River Severn by water was therefore, a great step forward.... From January 2016, this website is managed by Stroud Local History Society |
